South African Immigration no longer accepts non-machine readable travel documents. Travellers arriving with the non-machine readable passports will be refused entry and will also result in the conveyance being fined as the traveller effectively has an invalid passport.

Immigration will deal with those instances where a traveller arrives with a valid visa in a non-machine readable passport on a case-by-case basis.  In these cases, the traveller will still be fined as the document remains invalid.

BARSA members are advised not to load such travellers and advise them to obtain a machine-readable passport.  The traveller can then travel with his machine readable passport together with his non-readable passport containing the valid visa for South Africa until such time as the traveller can arrange to have the visa transferred to the valid machine-readable travel document.
